Mysore: When all shall perish
28/03/11 || Habakuk
Mysore (pronounced /maɪˈsɔər/ (listen) in English, Kannada: ಮೈಸೂರು Maisūru) is the second largest city in the state of Karnataka, India. It is the headquarters of the Mysore district and the Mysore division and lies about 146 km (91 mi) southwest of Bangalore, the capital of Karnataka.
Great work on that moniker, boys. You have some serious Search Engine Optimization in front of you. Apart from that, you’ve obviously done your homework. This demo is miles better than what other bands call full-lengths. What makes me so sure, you might ask – well: I usually don’t like your style, more precisely speaking, new metal with leanings towards modern In Flames/Soilwork on one side and Hatebreed (with a bit of imagination) on the other. This basically translates to simplistic chugging grooves including a lot of splash cymbals, ethereal synthies, the odd keyboards-only part and vocals shifting from clean choruses to shouted verses. And of course, your official genre is “death metal”. Yeah right.
However, not being fond of a certain style is one thing, denying talent is another one. And if these guys don’t get signed soon, I don’t know who is going to, as this shit sounds insanely professional and elaborate. The mixture sounds old and tired on paper (or screen), but with songs flowing nicely through spoken passages, little electronica bits, hard-hitters and melodic themes, effects used efficiently and effectively and vocals ranging from “Elegy”-era Amorphis (the cleans) to good (!) metalcore shouting, it’s clear these guys are on the money with their music.
I almost have to resort to nitpicking to point out weaknesses during these 20 minutes, apart from this still not exactly being my favorite kind of music: sometimes, the Gothenburg worship borders on copying (listen to “One life”, then to “Departure plan” by Soilwork). Also, Believe in yourself, believe in your dreams choruses are a no-go, and in some more instances the lyrics aren’t exactly fantastic, in stark contrast to their delivery.
Last but not least however, the production is crisp and surprisingly good for an independent release. I guess once these guys get a contract though, they will be pushed into the lifeless trademark As I Lay Dying “EVERYTHING MUST BE ON 10!!!” production and it will suck. Pure speculation obviously, but maybe they read this and I have just changed the course of the world. In any case, keep an eye out for them. And kindly remember where you heard it first.
